William Cassady Poems

THE SEA is the great strainer of our westward expansions
only the most fit and brave continued across
to start the trip again
rebirth across the sea
...

I remember when the salesmen came to town
Swatting dreams like distraction mosquitoes
They sold us horsespit a la mode
Traded them our wild cannonball dreams

The Sea

THE SEA is the great strainer of our westward expansions
only the most fit and brave continued across
to start the trip again
rebirth across the sea
ex occidente frux
ex oriente lux
and everyone else to fat to slow to make it
they're stuck here now
in the westcoast wastebin
steel strainer holding all the could-have-beens
the ones who settled for less in Colorado
and everybody back on the other coast
still hanging on to the top of the cage
and everyday the great god vibration
shakes more believers loose
and sends them to the coast
hitching stealing searching lusting for the sea
do they know what it is
what will they say
when they find the composted beatnick California
I hope some of them make it
