William L Roberts Poems

A new mountain range lines the horizon,
Black against the rising sun's golden sky.
My dog pays it no mind
And though I know it for illusion,
...

With the first faint glow of dawn
A bird sings in the tree across the lawn.
I'm awake, restless but unwilling to move.
There's an endless hour yet before the alarm,
...

Aimless as windblown paper
Chanced against the parking lot's chainlink fence,
She idles down the aisles in the Wal-Mart,
And pauses a time amid the cosmetics.
...

The arrow's green and I turn left.
Straight, there's a strip mall,
A dealership, a gas station,
Then the road climbs a hill.
...

With the crack of distant breaking trees,
Unheard and unseen,
Darkness and silence settles upon the house.
The furnace dies with a groan,
...

There's the sun, low, an horizon on fire.
Turn.
There's the moon, no higher,
Sweet with promise, golden and serene.
...

'Let's stop here for lunch.'
'Dad, there'll be a view
Just a little bit further.'
What he said was quite true.
...

The trail wound down and passed a lake.
Being in need of a rest,
I sat on a rock and looked across.
Since I could see the other side,
...

We've two new kittens at our house,
Eight months, calico and cute.
The dog'd sure like to give them the boot.
Though to scale, she's a dinosaur,
...

Found beer! found beer!
How I love my found beer!
Sometimes frozen, sometimes hot
Mostly flat, seldom a lot.
...

Had a yardsale today.
At first it made me sad,
But then I had a fancy that cheered me up
And I quite enjoyed myself,
...

The Wind caressed my face and whispered:
'I love a man.'

I thought, 'Perhaps she means me!
...

I woke in the early morning
To hear a bird singing,
Solitary, outside our window,
The only sound in the world.
...

'Make your presentation, tell us what you've learned! '
Love stood by the blackboard and waited.
In my dream she was my high school french teacher,
The one who sometimes slipped out of class
...

Spring dances in the air,
Filling every heart with gladness
Filling every mind with madness.
Each, after a walk around the parking lot,
...

Into my garden,
In the Springtime, the pretty song time,
My darling comes to me,
'Can I have the car keys and some money?
...

My son and I ambled along the sand,
Heading for a resort town
A mile or so down the beach.
We came upon a Miller Lite can
...

The trees outside the house
Have become lightly tinged with red.
It's doubly false:
Fall's both long since fled
...

A cat sleeps curled in my mind.
Her fur, rich and gray as smoke,
Crackles with every stroke -
Staticy in my dry mental air.
...

By the town pond we walked,
One fine Saturday in May,
Hand in hand, matching steps,
Walking as one along the sunlit bank.

A New Mountain Range Lines The Horizon

A new mountain range lines the horizon,
Black against the rising sun's golden sky.
My dog pays it no mind
And though I know it for illusion,
Just clouds from last night's storm piled high,
Certainly just illusion,
I still think of unhooking her leash
And setting off into the unknown:
To trap furs in some clean valley
To stake a claim by some fast flowing stream,
Perhaps to find a golden city
Peopled by credulous primitives
Whose first Middle American am I,
Perhaps to stand on the highest point, my Darien,
And look across an uncharted glittering ocean.
Our six feet turn from habit for home.
She's never once looked at the sky,
And knowing it illusion,
I bid all hope, goodbye.
