Cries coming from the crib,
Baby lies awake.
Alone in the night,
And scared of the dark.

Mother's Comfort

Cries coming from the crib,
Baby lies awake.
Alone in the night,
And scared of the dark.

Mother rises with the sound,
And goes to comfort baby.
She cradles him closely,
And whispers reassuringly:

“There’s nothing you should fear,
Everything is fine.
All is as it should be;
Earth’s watched by The Divine.”

Mother’s comfort does the trick,
And baby rests again-
It’s from this common scene,
That I ask a simple question:

Not “Why did baby wake? ”
Or “Why was baby crying? ”
No, I am left wonder:
“Was the mother lying? ”
