This Grave Is Not For Me

This grave is not for me;
I am young, and ambitious still.
I am not ready to let go of my life
Not ready to be held in a memory
By friends, and by family -
For the idea of death I hold such strife
I know I am wasted; I know I am ill -
But Lord, please hear my plea.

This grave looks too full of terror
It is too deep six feet under,
The solemnest soil would leave me cold
The sun would not see me again
Nor shall the moon mollify my pain.
I'll miss night stories being told
If I die, no matter where I wander
Because death could never be fairer.

I am not prepared to die, today or tomorrow,
This grave is not for me, it is too full of sorrow.
