The Survivor

How wonderful
she said
You're 85.
What a long life.

Long...yes.
I'm a survivor
and my body
aches a lot.

My mind only
works fitfully
and one thing
she should understand.

Being a survivor
I had to see
a generation
vanish around me.

Family and friends
all departed
to the great
unknown forever.

I am still
here but
at what
an emotional price.

Sunrise/Sunset

It was a
beautiful sunrise.
Even in the
muddy trench
he enjoyed it.

The Somme...July 1916.

The sunset was
just as splendid
but he didn't
see it even tho
his eyes were still open.
