I have fifty in my sight.
Say that's one a week
For fifty weeks -
That's not too ambitious;
...
Keep me in your heart,
Till I or love are gone,
Then let me out
Like a homeless tear,
...
Then in September
When the first leaves fell,
Soft and graceful,
You came down
...
I felt the nails
Pierce my hands,
I felt the flesh being tore
From my body;
...
I tend the fields until they are ready;
All day I turn over the soft soil,
All day I keep the horses going steady,
Now my work is almost done, my toil,
...
I always had a love for poetry. Growing up in Ireland poetry was everywhere, it was part of everyday speech. I never liked the fact it was considered high-brow, that it belonged to a certain class and that one had to be well-schooled to understand it. I don't think any poet ever wrote for a certain audience and I definitely do not either. True poetry is universal and its themes are as varied and as unique as we are. That's what makes it so special. I have had many poems published. Mostly in newspapers but the odd one or two featuring in books.)
Holiday
I have fifty in my sight.
Say that's one a week
For fifty weeks -
That's not too ambitious;
I'll still have two weeks off for holidays;
I need a break;
I intend to go to Rome this year -
I promised myself I would;
I'll spend the first week in the old city,
Visit St Peter's Basilica
And the Colosseum,
Obviously climb the Spanish Steps,
I've always wanted to to that;
Maybe toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain
So I'll go back;
The second I'll spend exploring the country;
And after that, I'll quite happily start writing
About the things I haven't done yet;
But first, I need a holiday.
Possibly my favourite poet on this site. Declan certainly inspires a variety of emotions with his passionate words, and in depth thinking. He is an amazing poet, and it has been a pleasure to meet him, he is a true gentleman.
you wear your heart on your sleeve, brother... and that's what make you an outstanding poet!
