Donna Pelan Poems

As I crawl out of bed each morning
Enthused about starting a new day
I grab a facecloth from the bathroom
To clear the sleepers away
...

About a half a century ago
When I was around 15 years old
I'd lived a rather sheltered life
Or this is what I've been told
...

I remember once having x-rays done
And had to fast twelve hours before
Had to get up early and with no coffee
Brushed my teeth and headed out the door
...

I had to go for bloodwork
On this monday past
Wasn`t looking forward to it
As it required a twelve hour fast
...

Thought I'd try my hand at gardening
Dug up some lawn out by the shed
Planted enough seeds to sow an acre
When a 10 foot square was all I had
...

Back in the early 90`s
I came across some seeds for pot
Had never tried to grow a plant before
I thought I might give it a shot
...

I used to shop at Penningtons
That was back a few years
It was located in Georgian Mall then
A couple of doors down from Sears
...

I grew up in a little New Brunswick village
And I was shy as I could be
So how I mustered up the courage to leave
Will forever remain a mystery to me
...

I spent some time at the Medical Arts building
Waiting fo a lady from my Red Cross run
While she was having a perscription filled
I studied people as it was fun
...

While vacationing in New Brunswick
Our family rented a chalet
Way up on the hillside
Facing the Fundy Bay
...

I decided to get some exercize
And headed off for the YMCA
I`d renewed my membership last week
So I should be able to pick up my pass today
...

While atmy favorite coffee shop this morning
Much to my dispair
I noticed cases of zombyism
Hanging in the air
...

Spent a couple of years at Mount St Louis
In a beautiful ski chalet
Thought clean air and country walks
Would be the order of the day

The Woman In The Mirror

As I crawl out of bed each morning
Enthused about starting a new day
I grab a facecloth from the bathroom
To clear the sleepers away

O-Oh that warm water feels so good on the eyes
But the same thing seems to happen each day
This old woman keeps staring back at me
Who the devil is she anyway

She has deep lines around her eyes
Crows feet I feel is a gentle term
If crows in trees had feet this big
They wouldn't have to hang on

The jowls hang loosly on both sides
Gravity had taken it's toll
But there's still a twinkle in those eyes
Age has apparently not robbed her of her soul

Hope those wrinkles were not the result of
Shedding too many a tear
But of partying with all her friends
Over a large jug of beer

She seems to have a lot of laugh lines
So perhaps she's had a life of fun
I'll bet she still has good friends and family
And an abundance of energy when the day is done

The blue in her eyes has lost its clearness
Her skin texture looks a little shoddy
One good thing with this small mirror
I can't see the rest of her body

I feel almost guilty feeling so good
When this poor old lady doesn't look so hot
So i've promised her I'd eat better and exercise
To try to avoid being in her spot

I hope i'm not invading her privacy
I try to do it without detection
I'm sure I'm not the woman in the mirror
It must be someone elses reflection.
