Keep the camp-fire burning just a little more
And sit with me and talk! We two, old friends,
Rest and look to morning even as this day ends.
...

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I won't be there, I will not sleep.
Where will you find me, what will you do?
You'll carry me always; my heart is in you.
...

The hardest time to say good-bye
is when one is arriving
'Come in, ' you say,
'Come in and stay and warm yourself.'
...

I in my chair,
She among the flowers,
As a peppermint breeze dances through daffodils.
Winter dies,
...

On a winter's day
When last we spoke,
My mother whispered close,
'You sang for me.'
...

Please don't tell the garden that I won't be there next spring,
The children, on their playing fields? They've more important things.
And don't disturb the neighbor's cat to tell her I am gone,
She's much too busy stalking bugs and field mice in the lawn.

This Day Ends

Keep the camp-fire burning just a little more
And sit with me and talk! We two, old friends,
Rest and look to morning even as this day ends.

Endings can be sad times. Celebrate instead
Never-ending summer days, birch stands, and loons;
Petoskey stones and picnics, and sleeping dunes.

Endings can be fright'ning times. Stop and stay awhile.
A river changes and is changed, there's no denying that.
Cast your fears like smooth skip-stones into the Platte.

Endings are new beginnings.
