My Dying Day

In my heart, there is a spark;
That spark may yet one day ignite
Into a flame that sheds it's light
To chase away the waiting dark
That until now has filled my mind,
And kept me wond'ring, 'If I die;
If tomorrow the sun comes up
For everyone else but me,
Have I used every precious breath
To leave a legacy, beyond my death? '

And on that day, could I declare,
'I've used my time, and left none spare;
No stone was left unturned,
No friendship left unearned.'

And with pleasure, could I say,
'Today might be my dying day,
But I've squeezed every drop of nectar sweet
From the solid rock beneath my feet,
And as I return from whence I came,
Know that I am not the same;
Nor is the world, in some small ways.'

'And most of all the one I love,
The one who was my night, my day
She is the reason I'm now struck
That life was poured into an empty cup,
And the sweet taste of it, as it was drunk,
Made me smile and bless my luck.'

And if when I die, I am given the choice
Of heaven eternal or the life that I've known,
I will reply, with a soft spoken voice:
'Thanks anyway Lord, but please send me home.'
