Am I He Or Me

I was walking down a road alone
When from behind a boulder jumped up a troll
With a voice like thunder he bellowed

'Who you be my fine fellow?
Who you be?
Answer me quick for I intend to eat thee! '

'Why do you wish to eat me?
As to who I be, why I be me,
I be me and only me, ' I replied

'How do I know you do not lie? '
He said with a scowl,
'Maybe I just not know and still eat you, ' he growled

'Why do you not believe that I am me?
Who else could I be? '
I said with a shrug

He examined me like you would a bug
'Another gent earlier passed me by
I stopped him as he was running by

And I asked him who he be
For he was going to be dinner for me.
But he told me

That he was not really he
But the he was coming up behind
He said that he did not mind

That I was going to eat him
He said that if I should wait for him
He would be happy to oblige me

So I have waited and now I am going to eat thee! '
Aghast I said, 'so he said that he was me?
Well how do you know that I am not he?

And having already passed you by
And thinking myself a clever bloke
Am laughing at you till I should choke.

For that matter I could be me
Or I could be the gent behind me!
For arguments sake how do I know that you are you

And not someone else that you once knew?
If the gent before said he was me,
Well that cannot be.

For I am not he
But he is the gent behind me
So if you wish to eat a me that's a he

And since I am not he
Than I say to you take care! '
He looked at me with a puzzled air.

And then he slowly spoke,
'If you are not that other bloke
Nor are you a he

Then you must not my dinner be!
So since you are not a he
Then from my sight forever flee!

For I must trap the me that's a he! '
With that he ducked back down
And I continued my way around the bend

And having passed him by
Laughed to myself for what a clever me am I
