Magnolia

Hidden from view,
Translucent, silken sheaths, unfurled,
Cling tremulously to the core,
Disrobed unwillingly,
Vulnerable to the softest breeze,
Fragile and unsure

Guarded jealously from you,
Borne within weathered, weary hands,
Delicately gnarled, calloused by the sands of time,
Of circumstance, of foolhardy faith,
Now curled around their prize
Trembling, desperate shields from strangers' eyes

Soft whispers of assurance,
I won't let it happen again,
Rest now, be safe,
It's you, and me, and life,
And we will thrive upon each other, my dear weary friend,
I won't let it happen again.
