VISITING CARD

The world is that which I look at:

the table that gathers upon it
banal things such as the tablecloth and the glasses,
the milky back of the mountains at dawn,
a chair that receives the slanted afternoon light,
the artichoke leaves lying on a plate.

Life is that which dies:

a hand raised that is already dust and roots,
the word avenging itself for lack of love and failure,
the smell of a soap rubbed on when ten years old,
this wounded earth with bones and shipwrecked persons.

Heaven and its hell, hatred and love,
happiness and unhappiness, the color of light,
are the missed encounter of all these things
dictated by my dark and uncertain heart.

No one looks at another face to face
from North to South distrust: suspicion
among smiles and careful politeness.
Dark the air and fear
in all the doorways and the elevators, in the beds.
A loose rain falls
like a deluge: world city
that will never know happiness.
Soft smells that look like remembrances
after so many years that are in the air.
Half-done city, always on the verge of looking like something
like a girl that begins to menstruate,
precarious, with no beauty whatever.
Nineteenth-century patios with geraniums
where very old ladies still serve chocolate;
tenement courtyards
inhabited by dirt and pain.
On the steep and always crepuscular streets
- an opaque light as if filtered by seedy alabaster plates -
scenes as familiar as death and love take place;
these streets are the labyrinth where I must walk and retrace
the steps that at the end will be my whole life.
Grey are the walls, and the trees,
and the air from the brow to the feet of the inhabitants.
Far off the green exists, a metallic and serene green,
a Patinir green of lagoon or river,
and behind the mountains it may be possible to see the sun.
The city that I love looks too much like my life;
the weariness and boredom of living together unite us
but also the irreplaceable customs and the wind.

donde ancianas señoras todavía sirven chocolate;
ocurren escenas tan familiares como la muerte y el amor;
La ciudad que amo se parece demasiado a mi vida;

ELEGY

I was walking looking at the sky
and I fell on my nose.
Now my whole body is bleeding.
My knees, the air, my memories.
My skirt was torn
and I lost my earrings, my reason.

Is there not in the soul
a different way
to live the end of love?

6.
ELEGIA

Caminaba mirando el cielo
y me fui de narices.
Ahora echo sangre por todas partes:
Las rodillas, el aire, los recuerdos;
mi falda se desgarró
y perdí los aretes, la razón.

No hay en el alma
una manera otra
de vivir un desamor?

HEAD OVER HEELS WITH LIFE

I know I am going to die because I no longer love anything.
Manuel Machado
I will die mortal,
that is to say having passed
through this world
without breaking or staining it.
I didn't invent a single vice,
but I tasted all the virtues:
I leased my soul
to hypocrisy: I have trafficked
with words,
with signs, with silence;
I surrendered to the lie:
I have hoped for hope,
I have loved love,
and one day I even pronounced
the words My Country;
I accepted the hoax:
I have been mother, citizen,
daughter, friend,
companion, lover;
I believed in the truth:
two and two are four,
María Mercedes ought to be born,
ought to grow, reproduce herself and die
and that's what I'm doing.
I am the sampler of the 20th century.
And when fear arrives
I go to watch television
to have a dialogue with my lies.

Manuel Machado
Moriré mortal,
es decir habiendo pasado
por este mundo
sin romperlo ni mancharlo.
No inventé ningún vicio,
pero gocé de todas las virtudes:
arrendé mi alma
a la hipocresía: he traficado
con las palabras,
con los gestos, con el silencio;
cedí a la mentira:
he esperado la esperanza,
he amado el amor,
y hasta algún día pronuncié
la palabra Patria;
acepté el engaño:
he sido madre, ciudadana,
hija de familia, amiga,
compañera, amante.
Creí en la verdad:
dos y dos son cuatro,
María Mercedes debe nacer,
crecer, reproducirse y morir
y en esas estoy.
Soy un dechado del siglo XX.
Y cuando el miedo llega
me voy a ver televisión
para dialogar con mis mentiras.

IF YOU WANT LOVE LET IT FOLLOW ITS WHIMS

I have forgotten all the names,
the names of my dead and of my sons.
I don't recognize the odours of my house
nor the sound of the key turning in the door.

I do not remember the timbre of my most cherished voices
nor do I see the things my eyes look at.
Words sound without me understanding them,
I am a stranger on these intimate streets
and there is no happiness or unhappiness that can wound me.

I have scratched out my history of forty years.
I love you.

10.

He borrado mi historia de 40 años.
Te amo.
