Sunlight Thick As Fog

sunlight thick as fog

hot and lazy country days
crunching gravel under bike tires
nothing to deter our venture
nothing to disturb the dream
coasting in this humid drug
in sunlight thick as fog
making our own breeze downhill
in soupy still humid air,
phone wire humming, never still.
gossip buzzing pole to pole.

up Otto's hill, a tough steep climb
sweating wheezing swerving
there to avoid loose gravel
the grader left behind... then
mounting pain relieved some,
cresting, resting now in ease
coasting down in selfmade breeze
that hot ...
