The stark appeal of ancient trees
Unleaved in winter sleep
The timeless night, the star-kissed dome
Is winter dark and deep.
And from that deep, a tiny bud
The promise of new life
Withstands the cold, the drought, the wind
Defeats all natural strife.
Until the spring of sun-warmed rose
Enchants us, moist and sweet
And voice of birds in morning song
Brings life to sallow cheeks.
Soon heat swells fruits and ripens wheat
Earth teems with living proof
Of summer's metamorphic reign
That falls on autumn's roof
