I lurk so smooth through the butterfly sea,
the tall green grass slides right by me.
A world of blue towers just above,
it’s days like this that I love.
My pinstriped face blends with the sun,
your wings do flutter oh little one.
This dangerous dance we shared ‘til now,
for one it shall end somehow.
My shoulders hunch,
your wings are taut,
I lunge; you fly,
that’s all I’ve got.
I taste the earth before I stagger,
looking down to see empty daggers.
You slip away from hungry paws,
and then I hear a dear friend call.
I stand again and still you flee,
I turn and leave the butterfly sea.
