1 Cant Get There Poem by Edith Niemeyer

1 Cant Get There

[YEARS A LIFE]

Can't get there from here—
teachings etched
in slivers of decency,
softened under light's failure,
like paper upon glass.
Catching that moonlight high,
shatterings stuffed to the bone,
not seeing eye to eye
because the eyepiece is missing.
Yet still—
get on in here.
Hear that echo.
Same type,
but the color is different,
left to catch
that one breath
that got away.
Hands taught
what talkin' matters,
and how far forever
really is.
After all is said and done,
make the best
of life's little hiccups—
because you can't
get there from here...
unless somewhere along the way
you quit asking how far,
and start measuring forever
by the pieces of yourself
you left behind.
And maybe
that breath that got away
wasn't lost at all.
Maybe it was only
life breathing back.
