3 A.M. Confession Poem by bella platt

3 A.M. Confession

You will never understand
what that first night did to me.

15: 50, August 28th.
South End.
Outside my grandparents' home
you pulled up,
the world so ordinary,
yet my heart knew instantly:
This is it.

You opened the boot.
I put my bag inside.
It was so simple.
But in my mind,
I gave you more than luggage.
I gave you my ribs, my veins,
my stupid, aching heart
all tucked neatly into that dark, hollow space,
trusting you to carry it,
trusting you not to break me.

The drive was quiet.
Not empty, not cold
but the kind of silence
that made me want to crawl closer,
to hear what your soul sounded like
when it finally spoke.
You didn't need words.
I filled the air with hope,
with the sound of futures being written
in invisible ink.
I told myself
that silence meant safety.
I was wrong.

I would look at you,
and it was like staring into the sun.
Dangerous.
Blinding.
Something that burned
and yet I couldn't look away.
You'd catch me,
say "What? " with that half-curious tone,
and I'd smile, hide,
say "Nothing."
We'd laugh.
That laugh was everything.
It felt like proof.
Like home.
Like maybe I had been found.

But I was only ever borrowing you.

You loved me for three weeks.
Three weeks
a blink to you,
an eternity to me.
Three weeks where I built an entire life in my head.
Three weeks where your hand brushing mine
felt like scripture.
Three weeks before you looked at me differently
before love curdled into disgust.
Before I became the burden
you couldn't wait to put down.

I still don't understand.
How do you go from holding someone
like they're precious,
to looking at them
like they're something rotten?
How did my heart become too much,
when all I ever gave you was softness?

And yet, even now,
even through the disgust,
even through the silence that grew sharp as knives
I love you.
God help me,
I love you still.
I will love you forever.
But I cannot run back.
I need to move forward,
even if moving forward feels
like tearing myself out of your arms
one broken bone at a time.

Do you know what it feels like
to cry so hard you can't breathe,
because the person you'd shatter the world for
can't even look at you?
Do you know what it feels like
to carry memories like bruises
you press over and over
just to remind yourself
it was real?

You don't.
You never will.
You walked away untouched,
while I bled in silence.

And now, I only have this
these words,
these late-night confessions
that no one will ever hear,
except maybe the dark,
maybe the page,
maybe you, if you somehow still listen.

You will never know
how loud the echo of your car door closing was.
How much it hurt when your laughter stopped.
How heavy it is
to still love you
when you look at me like I was never anything at all.

This was the first night.
And the last forever.

And if you ever wonder,
even for a second,
who would have died for you,
who would have loved you past reason
the answer will always be me.
The girl who left her heart in your boot
on a late August afternoon,
and never got it back.
