A Cricket Wants To Know Poem by Donal Mahoney

A Cricket Wants To Know

Harvey has a special room
in the basement that's always locked.
He keeps a safe there, some antiques
and family memorabilia he fears
midnight thieves might steal.

No one's ever been in that room
except Harvey and a loud cricket
that got in at least six months ago.
The room has no windows so Harvey
thinks the cricket crept under the door.

He knelt down with cloth and tape
and blocked off this entrance and exit.
But when he goes in the room
the cricket trills on and on.
Six months is a long time and

now Harvey wants to know
what does a cricket eat.
The cricket's on Facebook
so if you know the answer
please let Harvey know.
