A Dehati Professor Of English Poem by Bijay Kant Dubey

A Dehati Professor Of English

A dehati professor of English
He used to pronounce, spell strangely
Like some vernacular
And his pronunciation
Never British, nor American,
But Hindustani, Dehati English not, Angrezi
And his pronunciation used to be a landmark
Of linguistics and phonetics
When we used to see him pronouncing
Hinglish, Benglish,
Bhojpurian English after rubbing tobacco
And chewing paan
To stammer, gloat words,
Mumble and fumble
And it was a beauty to see him pronouncing
A Psalm of Life, Waiting for Godot
Cholera, pneumonia, colonel, lieutenant,
Thoreau, Goethe.
