A Difficult Road Poem by Derek Brendish

A Difficult Road

A DIFFICULT ROAD

By: Derek Richard Brendish

I sat beside this lonely road, dejected.
Tears welled up, I swallowed them back
And wondered, ‘could this be the end? '.
Then through the mist you glided in
Quickened heartbeats, lifted spirit, soon rejected
This is a dream, a loser, I never win.
Then I saw your beaming face, my friend.

You sat beside me, you held my hand
A rush of blood, a flush of life
You showed me a way, a short way down
There in the distance a hidden bend
‘That's your life, go follow your dreams'.
I staggered at first, then steadily walked
I watched you beside me, as the way slowly forked
Gentle sweetness, fragrant warmth
With renewed strength, no more gaunt.

We walked a bit, talked a bit
I watched your face, a radiant beam.
Why did you come? I asked you gently
Your eyes, they twinkled, ‘now we're a team'
My little pillar, my gush of strength
I wonder'd how long you'd travel this path.
The way was long, the path was rough
‘Where am I going? Oh! this is tough'
Then the warmth did part from me
I look beside, I looked behind, everywhere
I soon realized you were not there.
I sat beside this lonely road, dejected.
Tears welled up, I let them flow
And wondered, ‘could this be the end? '.

And then I saw you once again, in the distance
Should I call out? , or just follow you
I felt the vibes, then saw your glowing face
Head held so high gait infused with grace
Your path was another, so smooth and straight
Following or calling out could slow you down.
Would you turn around for one last time?
Could you just smile or give me a sign
Even if the road ahead be bumpy or rough
You'll wait for me at the end of the road
Then once again we can walk side by side
I'll be your strength, you be my guide.
