A Fading Bygone Rose Poem by Francis Duggan

A Fading Bygone Rose

So many hearts she had broken when she was young and sweet
The young males used to wolf whistle her when she walked down the street
But now she looks much older in the body and the face
Amongst the top Town beauties now she doesn't rate a place.

Though only in her thirties she has put on some weight
And she looks at least ten years older than one of thirty eight
She was one of the Town beauties just a decade ago
How quickly on some people the years begin to show.

She never married or had children she felt she had plenty of time
But time it is catching up on her ten years beyond her prime
No longer the great beauty with blue eyes and golden hair
Though only in her mid life she looks the worst for wear.

The young men now don't wolf whistle her as she walks by a building site
They stay about their business and remain calm and quiet
They do not show any interest on a fading bygone rose
The bloom of prime fades quickly that's life one must suppose.
