A Fresh Start Poem by Barry Hughes

A Fresh Start

I’m tired of taking a back seat in life
Watching the world pass me by all over again
It speeds past my eyes like a runaway train
And the light in the tunnel is oncoming pain

It’s hard for me to take every punch
Absorb every blow, just to laugh it off again
I try to find a reason push on, to fight through the day
But it’s hard to get up when you know the price that you’ll pay

Life used to be clear, easy to understand
Was I wrong or right? Am I lost or found?
If a scar starts to bleed is it still just a scar?
Truth be told I never thought I’d make it this far

It’s time that I stop with all my excuses
I’ll take this life by the throat and make it my own
This time it’s real and I’ll fight to the death
Regret’s only chance will be my very last breath
