I am Shan Teh, the sugar of Setzuan
and I am Shui Ta, its bitter herb
But as I am licked,
It is my commerce that dies of diabetes
even though my heart pleasantly beats
If I seek to heal my commerce as I ought
Setzuan will spill me out of their mouth with detest
and even though my commerce will leap out its sick bed
my heart will thus, mournfully beat-
for a good person of Setzuan, I crave to be.
