A Great Death Hath Occurred Poem by Onyi Ogwumike

A Great Death Hath Occurred

Love died at his lips.
Jumping off of his tongue into the razor sharp blades of a sea of cruel reality. The merciless waves of sorrow slashing against his face, as painful life slowly filled the lungs of my beloved. Drowning in his own tears.

Love died at his hands.
Blood rushed through James’ fingers as they found their place at Love’s neck. Love taking in a fleeting breath, his last plea shining bright in his eyes; as James tightened his grip and wrung the gold from where they gently kissed his cheeks. His face turning a deep amethyst, James’ smile gleaming as if whitened by the horrendous deed that doused his name in evil.

My eyes water, as I mourn my sole comforter. The grief that hugs my heart turns dark. A spirit of anger accompanies it; my lament turns to a cry for justice. An inferno ignites in my soul; the roar of its mighty burn deafens the voice of reasoning that sings to calm me. Wrath bubbles in my veins.

He murdered my dear Love,
and he shall pay.
