When I write you of spring,
Please, do not rush to reply.
After all, summer is long—
I won't be the one reading letters,
But a book of poetry instead,
Or a stream in a small town,
Flowing gently past the brows of green mountains.
When the leaves begin to fall,
Send me an autumn letter in return.
Then I may know your heart,
And between every word and line,
Press upon you a lingering kiss—
One that lasts till snow crowns our shoulders,
Till the world is wrapped in white,
And we call it scenery.
