A Lullaby To My Inner Demons Poem by Asha Iyer Kumar

A Lullaby To My Inner Demons

I summon a lullaby
From a distant memory,
To put my (inner) demons to sleep.
They have indulged for long,
Capering in my courtyard,
Sprouting like toxic weeds,
Laying siege to my tentative reign.
It is time to sedate them.

Sleep, evil elves, sleep.
Let me sing to you this cradle song
and rock you to rest on my lap.
Infants of my restive nights,
Let me be kind to your villainy,
And watch over you
with eyes burdened with dark half-moons.

I serenade you softly tonight
bearing my sickness of wakefulness
so that you may sleep
gently to your death.
