I Have Known You Poem by Asha Iyer Kumar

I Have Known You

I haven't seen you through the ages,
Through the changes,
Through your thriving, wilting and resurrection,
And the cycle of alterations.

I have known you before the bridge was washed away
by time's deluge
and our own little captivities.

I have known you as one will know God,
Intangibly, uncertainly,
Between pleats of doubt and faith,
Seeking hope amidst notions of soft betrayals.

I have owned you as one will keep old habits,
Loathe to toss away, reluctant to retain
Between stacks of love and disdain.

There has been more unknowing in these years
through our absences for each other.
Remembrance has been bare,
Like a sea that has forgotten froth,
And a sky that has forsaken fluffs.

If voids could speak,
They would reiterate that
I have known you.
And that is not the same as
I knew you
(Before the bridge was washed away) .
