A Name Poem by Sadie Monroe

A Name

What is in a name?
identity, sense of self, individualism?
Why have I never had that?
I've never felt right turning when someone said my name.
There are so many others that remind me of myself.
So why do I have this one?

I would never tell my mother I can't stand my name.
She loves it.
What is there to love?
Only one syllable.
No melody.
The name they associate with their perception of me.
It's not like they know me anyway.

So I am someone else on the internet
I am someone else in my head and in my poetry and in my stories
but at the end of the day
I shut this laptop
and I am still who I'm running from.

I'm still me.
