A National Hymn Poem by Marcus Mosiah Garvey

A National Hymn

1. Oh God of ages past, and age that ne'er shall end
Bless Thou our fervent hope,
And to our President Thy graces lend
And bless our fervent hope.

Refrain:
Bless Thou our fervent hope
And lead us always right,
Bless Thou our fervent hope
In battles we may fight.

2. Give him superb the power to defeat the foe
And lead him always right,
Let us not drink the draught of human woe
But lead us always right.

3. Frustrate the enemies and make us sure to win,
In battles we may fight,
Against the world and wicked men of sin
For battles we may fight.

4. Triumphant ever make us be in holy war,
Our enemies to crush:
From earth and distant planes and realms afar
All foes we hope to crush.

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

Always uplifting. The voice of early nineteen hundred Afican diaspora. When I think of the time period he was speaking in, I am in awe of his bravery.
