A New Nigeria Is Possible Poem by Ogunbowale Olugbenga

A New Nigeria Is Possible

My tea I sip,
As I stare out of the ship

I think about the ugly, good & the bad,
& their unsuccessful attempt to distract: yeah the live band

I muse over the otherwise lucky lad,
We elected to govern our land

Today, our largely recycled 'leaders' loot our treasury,
Leaving the masses in penury

They fly around with multiple jets,
They lie, they lust, they disgust...how worse it gets

And I say to myself, 'Where are the leaders? '
Where are the visionaries? The ones we young ones can use as ladders

Where are the Azikiwe's, the Ahmadu Bello's and the Awolowo's
Where are principled, passionate progressives?

Our founding fathers left a legacy for our nation
What shall be ours to the coming generation?

To move this nation forward
We must first change ourselves, then our ward

The ship of our nation is headed for avoidable icebergs,
Now is the time to rid her of thugs & bogs

A NEW NIGERIA IS POSSIBLE
AND IT BEGINS WITH YOU.
