A Perception Of Life Poem by Patrick Villareal

A Perception Of Life

Sometimes when the rain pours
Along the shore of my mind
I look to the dark clouds that I find
Where my heart only soars
Then I peer down to this wet sand
Constantly kissed by the moving tide
I pick up gleaming shells, those thought to have died
I remember that this was not a barren land
At least it was not meant to be
For a quick moment I truly see
Shining seas and pure waters
Warm images of natures sons and daughters
White clouds and calm winds that roam freely
I only glimpse for a moment of this splendid sight
Emitted in my mentality
Before being pulled back into reality
Whereth now I see a useless fight
A struggle for what cannot be given
That the ambitious human mind has driven
Only a cold grim reality will fall upon my hands
Slipping through my fingers; these cold damned sands
Yet, I cannot surrender my will
Even if good here remains still
Throughout the ages and perhaps the rest of time
Maybe 'tis a wall mere mortals cannot climb
I must smile, awaiting the cold winds to lift my soul
With arms held open
(Away from human control)
Like a graceful bird soaring high
Giving a last loving kiss good-bye.
