A Perception Poem by Rajesh Thankappan

A Perception

Is there not a difference
A perceivable emotional difference
When, let me say, we behold an unglamorous crow
Pierced to dead by a deadly arrow
Or when we sight a beautiful parrot
That too had met a similar end?

Is there a difference
A perceivable emotional difference
When people get killed
Across the length and breadth of the globe
And the way we reserve our sobs?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
N.B. Terrorist struck Paris in January 2015 killing 17 people. This unfortunate incident attracted worldwide attention and global leaders joined an estimated 307 million people on the streets of Paris in a show of solidarity. However, when more than 2000 people got killed in Boko Haram’s Baga attacks which too were carried out during the same period, it was largely ignored by the international community and even by the media. Yours is a genuine doubt.... Unfortunately even our sobs are conditioned! Discrimination continues from birth to the grave! But we cannot help it! The death of a dear one affects us more than the death of a distant one which is quite natural....! It all depends! A very logical write!

You have asked a big question - a profound one. Yes. There is a difference. When the one that has gone is close, the pain is more. The size also matters. No one concerns oneself with the death of an ant or a fly. But the death of a pet or a close relative brings in a torrent of sobs. Life is like that. Good write.
