A Perfect Rhyme For Gorgeous Poem by Heidi K. Haskell

A Perfect Rhyme For Gorgeous

Rating: 5.0

And will it make him love you
To be sparkling and witty and gorgeous,
To be self-assured, self-aware, self-self?
Will it fix the mistakes you've made -
Stop the glaring eyes, glaring light, glaring errors?
Will it finally lay to rest the living dead,
The zombies of memory, re-animated flesh of blunders past?
Will it make you less invisible for a minute?
No, it won't. Sorry about that.
Stand there, be ignored - keep it under your hat.
Wait for the race to end; there's no chance you'll win it.
Best you can hope is not to come in dead last.
Give no voice to matchless dreams nor nameless terrors.
Oh, the sun can blister, so grow mossy in the shade.
Sit there, full of knowing, a thesaurus on the shelf,
Comprehending there's no perfect rhyme for gorgeous,
And that believing that there's somebody for everyone doesn't make it true.

But even perfect rhymes, alas, can become jarringly pedantic
And give you silly tritenesses like cope and soap and rope.
My only coda when life's imperfections are frantic:
I hope to hope to hope to hope to hope.

This one is hard, like diamond. You can't refute it. But I hope the writing made you more comfortble.
