Sun bakes the sand, a dusty, golden sea,
Little homes dug deep, for you and for me.
Prairie dog town, a busy, chattering place,
Tiny heads peek out, with a curious face.
Mama warms the pups, so round and so small,
Safe in their burrow, away from it all.
Then a shadow slithers, long and so sly,
Eyes glinting, hungry, beneath the blue sky.
A snake, it is coming, to find a quick treat,
The tiny pups sleeping, oh, what a defeat!
But Papa is watching, with heart full of dread,
He'll be the distraction, instead of their bed.
He barks a loud warning, a whistle so high,
Runs out to the open, beneath the sun's eye.
He darts and he dashes, a quick little blur,
Hoping the snake follows, and not the soft fur.
The snake turns its head, its long body sways,
Towards the quick movement, in the sun's golden haze.
Papa keeps running, a brave, tiny knight,
Leading the danger, with all of his might.
Far from the burrow, he leads it astray,
Hoping its hunger will just go away.
Back in the darkness, the pups stay asleep,
While Papa's brave gamble, a promise to keep.
