A Restless Night's Wake. Poem by Aidan Cost

A Restless Night's Wake.

There's that wretched noise again,
You know the one, it blends into all the others,
The rattling of pipes some contractor installed in the 80s,
He was probably on enough to buy a house and support 3 kids back then,
One of those single income families, almost completely unthinkable these days,
To think I've lived through 9 prime ministers (to todays count) and it's only gotten worse,
Blue tie, red tie, red tie, blue tie blue tie blue tie blue tie blue tie red tie..
We've been sold out you know? Through every clickbait article and every hungry journalist desperate to print for the gutter press,
Journalism used to mean something, to publish what the powerful didn't want you to shine a light on,
But the powers gone out, £200 quid a month I'm paying not to freeze in my one bed flat,
But I should be grateful because people are freezing on the streets, theres an implied violence if I don't comply,
Do what you're told and stay quiet like a good worker.
There's that wretched noise again...
