A Simple Nubian. Poem by Elorm Dogbo

A Simple Nubian.

No one would understand me
As a simple Nubian
Enough is what I gain
And I never envy what others gain
A simple Nubian
That is what I am.

Would you understand me
Saying, I am a simple Nubian
You cannot take what my heart attain
Because I am my own surviving captain
A simple Nubian
That is what I am.

Would you stand by me
As a simple Nubian
Not sweet as the sugarcane
But I am so plain
A simple Nubian
That is what I am.

Would you abhor me
As a simple Nubian
I never spare the cane
When children become naughty again
A simple Nubian
That is what I am.

Would you compare me
As a simple Nubian
To someone from Britain
I have never board a plane
A simple Nubian
That is what I am.
