A Soul Destroying Thing Poem by Francis Duggan

A Soul Destroying Thing

The town's most famous person is known far and wide
Quite a young man with time on his side
He is quite a hero to fans of Football
But as a person he is one not that great at all
Any bit of humility that was in him it now does seem dead
It does seem fame and success has gone to his head
Suppose many of the celebrated as him much the same
It can be soul destroying this thing known as fame
Many of the famous the friendship of former friends does not retain
The reason for this seems not hard to explain
In the mind of an expanding ego humility cannot bloom
The finer human traits crowded out and for them little room
For many of those that the praises ofthe masses does sing
It can be indeed a soul destroying thing.
