A Stubborn Secret Poem by Ellen Rose Guilaran

A Stubborn Secret

What stubborn secrets does he hide
Within his closet floor?
A skull or skeleton inside—
I watch behind the door.

He dances in the silver light,
With letters from strange men.
Online he feels a massive might,
But who is he within?

Oh, how joyful he could be, As bright as summer skies!
And yet he chooses not to see,
And runs away in lies.

I pack my bags, I take my flight,
My knapsack on my back.
I barked my highest in the night,
And left a final track:

'My loyalty was yours alone,
A dog unto his lord.
Romance was never to be known,
Nor love as your reward.

Your fleeting whims are unto men,
So please, to self be true.
Or you will pay the price again,
When future dues are due.'

I turned my back and walked away.
Will he reveal his heart?
Or sacrifice a maiden's day
To play a false man's part?

Oh master, what a heavy cost,
To keep your secret true.
A loyal hound is what you lost,
The monkey speaks for you. 🙊
