A Toast To Old Friends Poem by Carlos Edd

A Toast To Old Friends

Rating: 5.0

Forty-some years ago, I met a girl named Vivian
A ridiculously good-looking young woman
And like a lightning bolt, she shook me crazy, very crazy
I knew by then my life turned complicated and messy

How can I be with her when I was with someone else?
Lie and deny could be my excuse which might fit me best
Try not to get caught and I would not miss a bit
But, what kind of life is full with cheats and misfits?

The choice was easy; I came honest and rightfully so
We felt in love and endeared each other as lovers do
We laughed and had fun through out those days, until
She had to go and forever hurt our love and will

After forty-some years we are back once again
Not as we-were-once lovers but as dear friends
Often we pick from our past bits and pieces
But most often we end up thinking about what-ifs

Memories from our past bring back cherished moments
Promises made to keep our dreams alive and not forgotten
But the past could also be such a sorrow and pain
Questions and circumstances asked but still remain

Now is all about the present for what it is worth
Friends we may and may be brought forth
To a friendship separated with no limits and boundaries
An opportunity we never had as lovers from yesteryears

So as we move on I say this to the woman named Vivian
A happy birthday and many more to you my dear friend
With family, friends, guests and all that you are to attend
Don't forget when drinks come pouring; "Make a toast to old friends! "
