The Crazy Woman - Poem by Gwendolyn Brooks

I shall not sing a May song.
A May song should be gay.
I'll wait until November
And sing a song of gray.

I'll wait until November
That is the time for me.
I'll go out in the frosty dark
And sing most terribly.

And all the little people
Will stare at me and say,
"That is the Crazy Woman
Who would not sing in May."

This *" Crazy Woman" must have been quite remarkable to make the top 500.

The world is slowly changing where we can be who we want to be. Sing to feel alive. May you rest in Peace.

WHY must she be oft a crazy woman who sings the song of gray and in November? WHY-WHY-WHY? A sane woman can and dare to sing this song of November full of gray, not only The crazy woman. To the family of the late poetess CONGRATULATIONS on being chosen as The Modern Poem Of The Day. Hooray! God Blesses You All. (Report) Reply

Crazy Poems

  1. Crazy Jane And Jack The Journeyman

I know, although when looks meet I tremble to the bone, The more I leave the door unlatched The sooner love is gone, For love is but a skein unwound Between the dark and dawn. A lonely ghost the ghost is That to God shall come; I - love's skein upon the ground, My body in the tomb - Shall leap into the light lost In my mother's womb. But were I left to lie alone In an empty bed, The skein so bound us ghost to ghost When he turned his head passing on the road that night, Mine must walk when dead.

  2. Crazy Jane Grown Old Looks At The Dancers

I found that ivory image there Dancing with her chosen youth, But when he wound her coal-black hair As though to strangle her, no scream Or bodily movement did I dare, Eyes under eyelids did so gleam; Love is like the lion's tooth. When She, and though some said she played I said that she had danced heart's truth, Drew a knife to strike him dead, I could but leave him to his fate; For no matter what is said They had all that had their hate; Love is like the lion's tooth. Did he die or did she die? Seemed to die or died they both? God be with the times when I Cared not a thraneen for what chanced So that I had the limbs to try Such a dance as there was danced - Love is like the lion's tooth.

  3. Crazy Jane Talks With The Bishop

I met the Bishop on the road And much said he and I. 'Those breasts are flat and fallen now, Those veins must soon be dry; Live in a heavenly mansion, Not in some foul sty.' 'Fair and foul are near of kin, And fair needs foul,' I cried. 'My friends are gone, but that's a truth Nor grave nor bed denied, Learned in bodily lowliness And in the heart's pride. 'A woman can be proud and stiff When on love intent; But Love has pitched his mansion in The place of excrement; For nothing can be sole or whole That has not been rent.'

  4. If The World Was Crazy

If the world was crazy, you know what I'd eat? A big slice of soup and a whole quart of meat, A lemonade sandwich, and then I might try Some roasted ice cream or a bicycle pie, A nice notebook salad, and underwear roast, An omelet of hats and some crisp cardboard toast, A thick malted milk made from pencils and daisies, And that's what I'd eat if the world was crazy. If the world was crazy, you know what I'd wear? A chocolate suit and a tie of eclair, Some marshmallow earmuffs, some licorice shoes, And I'd read a paper of peppermint news. I'd call the boys 'Suzy' and I'd call the girls 'Harry,' I'd talk through my ears, and I always would carry A paper unbrella for when it grew hazy To keep in the rain, if the world was crazy. If the world was crazy, you know what I'd do? I'd walk on the ocean and swim in my shoe, I'd fly through the ground and I'd skip through the air, I'd run down the bathtub and bathe on the stair. When I met somebody I'd say 'G'bye, Joe,' And when I was leaving - then I'd say 'Hello.' And the greatest of men would be silly and lazy So I would be king... if the world was cazy.
