A Wet Rainy Day Poem by Deanna Samuels

A Wet Rainy Day

Everything all around so bedraggled,
puddles getting ever deeper,
water swirling around clogged up drains,
overflowed, forming into a stream
running over road to opposite side.
Gullies rise to height capacity
spilling over onto fields and paths.
Rain barrels full to the brim,
gutters barely able to cope.

Newly unfurled tree foliage
droop and drip bedraggled,
unable to show off their bright
new spring dress of fresh green,
while grass and tree take in this
life-refreshing succor.

Birds sit tightly in their nests
protecting, keeping newly laid eggs warm
while garden creatures
dig deep into their dens,
only scurrying out quickly to catch
a passing easy meal.

Humans of course go about their daily tasks
with umbrella protection from drenching rain,
shoes getting wetter with every step
squelching over crossings and pathways,
clothing dripping around the feet
then slither into shops and stores
leaving small puddles at each counter.

Everywhere, everything is dripping wet,
a way of cleansing, a way to renew.
Such precious rain for every living molecule
giving needed nourishment for life all around
