Addio! Poem by David Stern

Addio!

I
'If you search for me? -the Truth cries -
Then with temporal passions,
Untie your knot, you son of the earth!
Or you will never see even a shadow of me…"

II
Then strong Popularity will shout in response:
'Come! -with temporal passions
Unite, you tardy son of the earth:
My name? ... action, truth? ... vanity! '

III
Farewell, both of you -goodbye!
I am summoned by dreams to the cemetery moss;
I do not wish to see this vain Truth,
Nor that Popularity, with no conscience.
