David Stern Poems

Oh, Mother Gaia
Please accept the ashes
Of my self-cremated heart
In your all-forgiving soil
...

The night has spread her vast sorrow
above my head
With flickering candles of suns
long dead
...

I am a furnace, empty and cold
And only ashes and soot remain
Where for a moment rampant flames blazed
This fire burned out all things inside
...

The old wrinkled woman hanged herself in the sky
Her bruised round face gives a sick blue light
Which haunts the sorry creatures crawling at night
Cursing with melancholy the heartbroken lovers
...

I can see a vulture
circling above my head
I can hear a hyena
laughing behind my back
...

6.

All is left is ash
After fires play
No more black or white
It's the price you pay
...

Silent night, rainy night
(Third Christmas without you)
All is calm but my heart
(Third year since I met you)
...

Torn out from my slumber
By a bolt that summoned rain
Black billows stunned the sky
Calm repose turned into pain
...

The crow never cries
The crow never lies
The crow doesn't say a word
...

Don't ask me for a humble song anymore
For its voice is mute in me
And if I'm silent, chide me not for that
Don't you want flowers from wheat...
...

I
How not to be bored? when above this globe
A million silent stars glimmer
And each shines in a different way
...

I
Above the Capulets' and the Montagues' houses,
Shaken by thunders, rinsed by the rain,
The calm eye of the blue.
...

13.

I
Like a wild beast M i s f o r t u n e has come to the man
Piercing with its fatal eyes...
— Awaits — —
...

Don't sin by saying I've hurt thee or that I still do
For I withdrew from thee for six thousand miles
And buried my tears in the ocean depths
From which there will be pearls new...!
...

Silence - only the spider stirs her web at times,
Or a gentle breeze strokes the poplar outside;
Oh! How my soul can breathe and sweetly dream -
Here no chatter, no smile shackles my thoughts.
...

16.

I
'If you search for me? -the Truth cries -
Then with temporal passions,
Untie your knot, you son of the earth!
...

1.
What? to tell her… Oh! Whatever you like,
Without much eloquence;
Something - of general truths, such as: a day
...

It's silly to think your wish may come true
Still, with my eyes closed, at candles I blew
And in my head I did silently shout:
"I wish A. would be my wife! "
...

Fire is there and here is rain
Charm is with you, I stick with pain
I go through thick, you go through thin
I live without, while you live within
...

Once I met the one
She was not the one
She missed just one thing
I missed more than one
...

Return To Soil

Oh, Mother Gaia
Please accept the ashes
Of my self-cremated heart
In your all-forgiving soil
Empty chested I must tread
Your surface for a while
But I long to return
Where I belong
