Adlestrop Poem by Richard Devereux

Adlestrop

Rating: 5.0

the 13th of June 2014
out we strode
across the Green at Shalford
our cool-bags packed for Lords
we caught the 8.02 to Guildford
from there the 8.15 to Waterloo
the train stopped at Worplesdon

Worplesdon not Adlestrop
might have been the poem
Edward Thomas wrote
had his train stopped at Worplesdon
had he been staying with Surrey friends
heading for the cricket
here he might have heard the blackbirds' song
and read the name

as the train stood at Worplesdon
I opened poemhunter.com
on my phone
and read Adlestrop again
