Al Hoceima, July Poem by James Munro

Al Hoceima, July

I amble down
into the bay
before the heat
before the day

while the sea
is green and gold
the sand still cool
the water cold

and hunker down
beside a tree
to let the day
catch up with me.

I close my eyes.
I feel the breeze
blow hotter,
hear the sea, the trees,

the soughing leaves -
till the tree itself
down in the dark
in the cool of the earth

stirs, and I,
out in the heat,
open my eyes
get to my feet

go down the sand
to the sea from the sky
as we did in the Pleiocene,
she and I.
