All Night Poem by Matt Render

All Night

Rating: 4.0

I spent all night listening to the words pouring out of your mouth uncontrollably
I sat there patiently and beyond consoling
I couldn't wait for it to be over

The rain started to trickle
Little by little
Gradually it pounded more violently
And I still sat by
Idly and silently
Biding my time
Biting my tongue
I imagined my thumbs pressuring deeply into your eye sockets and up inside your skull
I felt hungry and tired of my time being sucked out of my life like a vacuum
Precious time that I'd otherwise anyways be wasting
But in any case, I continued to sit degrading and debasing myself with your empty clattering and pattering playing on a feedback loop like a soundtrack to my own slow deterioration
It's 3 am and the birds are rising
The birds are singing
Bringing greater anxiety
The daybreak is coming fast to spite me
I'm begging you to leave me
Don't make me do it
Don't make me say goodbye again
I can't face the humiliation
Of possibly insulting your emotions
And dropping this polite facade
This poor man's act of charity
That I call humanity
That I call sanity
And decency
Knowing it's but the furthest thing from it
And how the beasts cometh knocking
Clawing
Digging raw chunks of meat from my bones
Until finally, you leave me alone
And I walk a free man
At peace
As one
Alive
In love.
