Almost There Poem by Patrick Villareal

Almost There

Sprinting steadily towards the finish line I press on
Putting my will to the test, I’ve been moving since dawn
Running and striving along the dirt path, my legs ache
Begging for rest and recovery, it is certain death for all that’s at stake
My weary heart thumps as my chest burns; I am almost there
Almost there as I move even quicker now, to victory I will ensnare!
Charging down the hill I am ready to take what is mine
So close I can see my future just as I see that bright yellow line
As I reach for victory I am soon pushed aside, being spilled to natures floor
Descending quickly to the earth, defeat has again found me... just as it swore
I lie on the rocky terrain; I look on as my heart quickly sinks
Gazing tragically as I was almost there…embracing the dirt…I was almost there…
