Altar Of Assumptions Poem by Raimi Babatunde

Altar Of Assumptions

I doubted my raging doubts
but saw tomorrow in his eyes.
Swayed by his dexterity
and oratorical prowess,
he was more of a smooth operator
savvy with well carved beards
that I prayed him in before I prayed.
How everything was sanctified on the altar of assumption!

I should have kept my 'Yes' till I was sure
but I was fooled by his grace and grandeur.
But for my hurts and disappointments
I should have prayed before I became a prey.
If marriage is first for companionship
procreation is then but a gift.

I got laid and got served
when I should have been celibate.
Now that the veil is unveiled and decades of innocence ruptured
who will help me unpack my baggage?
Do they ever look beyond your curves and pointing nipples?
If all prophets in Egypt bowed to Baal
surely there is a king for every queen out there -
Surely there is!
