America America Poem by Shalom Freedman

America America

AMERICA AMERICA

For years I didn't miss it
It is so great after all
It never needed me
And never will
I forgot it in a way
No matter how much I missed
The people I knew and loved there
I didn't miss it
But now today
For the first time
In a long long time
I just wanted to be there again
To see it for one more last time
To say goodbye with my eyes and heart and mind
America America
Of my childhood and early years
Of so much gone now
Rolling on and on
Great in so many ways
One more time
I long to see you again.
