An Average Anomaly Poem by Rachael Swiss

An Average Anomaly

Non compos mentis
I adjusted to the abnormal
And derived a new routine -
Encompassing the most basic
Arithmetic equations
With this temporary acquisition
Of you.

Irrational and illogical and illustrious,
Unsure of my lucidity
And the comfort of a warmth envisioned,
(Experienced or imagined?)
Only to be enslaved and plagued
By the thought of these two feet landing
Unsteadily on quaking ground.

Time is insufficient and significant
Like an Other, gone;
Too soon to be forgotten
Too early to return.

The coup d’etat,
De grace, is love
As a boulder
Rolling down a steep incline
Velocity increasing
Overthrowing the present
In its steady, stubborn path.

Remembering again…
The days should run together
In one stream of consciousness,
Cohesive and constant –
Flushing out worry in a jet-stream
But oh, how they trickle and crawl!
